Director: Wally Pfister
Starring: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall

Transcendence is a science fiction thriller which ultimately asks, are communities becoming too dependent on technology? Is the internet taking over our lives and are we increasingly being brainwashed into doing everything online? This is Hollywood's take on an ongoing controversial issue - as technology clashes with humanity.

Dr Will Castor (Johnny Depp) is an artificial intelligence researcher aided by his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and they create a powerful machine which has a full range of human emotions. Anti-technology terrorists strike and Castor is shot with a radio active poisoned bullet. When he dies, his wife decides to upload his consciousness online as a means of being able to stay 'with him' and continue their work.

All goes haywire when Castor takes over the cyber space and he (his spirit, his cyber-self...whatever!) becomes more menacing as his power increases. Produced on an inflated blockbuster budget of US$100 million, Transcendence was declared a box office disaster on its opening weekend in America with meagre receipts of US$11 million and it's not hard to see why.

The story is ludicrous and moronic, laughable at best. The film is dull, boring, mundane, over long and only offers half explained theories. The excessive budget does not translate on the big screen and contains minimal CGI and action.

Johnny Depp looks detached and is wasted, since most of his scenes are merely facial images on computer screens. Unfortunately he no longer has the box office draw which is mandatory for survival in the movie industry. Morgan Freeman looks lost, bored and disenchanted as 'somebody in authority' - but ultimately, who can blame him?
