Director: Akiva Schaffer
Starring: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn

Never having been a fan of Ben Stiller nor Vince Vaughn I was pleasantly surprised by The Watch, their latest cinematic venture, which is quite different to any movie either actor has been in. Slightly low on laughs, but an enjoyably silly storyline and a good ensemble cast made it fun to watch.

Ben Stiller plays the role of Evan, a man who decides to get a neighbourhood watch program started in his suburb when one of his work mates is murdered. He recruits 3 ding-a-lings who seem to be excited about being in "the watch" even though they have no idea what is involved .These four bumbling heroes take to the streets trying to locate the murderer and along the way discover that there are extraterrestrials amongst them with intent on invading the Earth.

Understandably, this movie failed to find an audience when released in cinemas, as there was confusion as to what Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn were doing in a comic "science fiction" movie about creepy space creatures trying to take over the earth. These comedians were definitely out of their comfort zone and movie goers simply didn't want to see them in a film which could aptly be described as a cross between Ghostbusters and Alien. Plenty of "alien action", and CGI which made other movies in this genre pale in comparison still wasn't enough to arouse curiosity.

Blatant scene stealing from ET and Alien was evident, which added ridicule and merriment to the film. Plenty of "tongue-in-cheek" violence and gore highlighted that ultimately this was a comedy rather than a violent Sci-Fi flick. Produced for US$68 million the movie just broke even at the box office, but will hopefully find more success on DVD & Blu Ray.
