America has Schindler’s List. Italy has A Beautiful Life. Now France can proudly boast that they too have produced a remarkable film about one of the darkest chapters in modern history; that of the Jewish extermination during WWII. The Roundup is equally as powerful & effective as Speilberg’s film. It is heart wrenching, hard to watch at times & shows the atrocities being committed to innocent people, whose crime was being born Jewish.

Set in Paris 1942 & based on actual events, it realistically tells the story of the roundup & deportation of Jews to death camps .The central character is a German female nurse who saw how these Jewish were being mistreated & was not afraid to voice her opinion. The French Jews seemed very trusting & oblivious to the dangers that lay ahead. They discounted rumours that the children would also be taken away. It was decided by the authorities that the French police would handle everything associated with the roundup & that 26,000 Jews would be sent to the velodrome & afterwards to the camps.

Beautifully produced & so realistic owing to the brilliant performances from the cast, especially from the younger children who made the scenes where they were torn away from their parents very harrowing & heartbreaking to watch. A wonderful musical score of the day & actual footage of Hitler & his henchmen also complimented the atmosphere of the movie. A must see for anybody who is intrigued with History & the German occupation of Europe, this film is thought provoking & makes us realise how lucky we are to be living in another time and in another place.
