Perks Of Being A Wallflower, which is based on a critically acclaimed novel by the same name, was directed by Stephen Chbosky who also authored the book. This is an attribute as it ensured that the author’s vision of the characters and storylines were not distorted or lost in translation.
Charlie (Logan Lerman) is somewhat tragic. Having endured a year of personal disasters he is a freshman in highschool. His mental health is questionable. He is sensitive, quiet, unpopular, looked down upon as a loser & only has one friend, an English Teacher, until he is befriended by Sam (Emma Watson) & Patrick (Ezra Miller) two senior students. They become a pivotal influence in his life & he shares a strong bond with Sam.
At first glance this movie is about a loner who makes friends and suddenly becomes popular, but there is just so much more to this movie. It’s about innocence, first love, close friendships, disappointments, regrets, letting go of the past, moving forward and also about being true to one’s self. The audience experiences the obstacles these likeable characters encounter, obstacles which members in the audience would have encountered in their own youth. Teenagers are the target audience who should instantly identify with the characters and storylines.
Emma Watson is the standout performer who has matured as the leading lady & has now proven she can be the driving force in any movie she stars in. An actress in her own right who has finally lost the label of “that girl from the Harry Potter movies”. This journey through adolescence is enriching, involving, humorous & at times emotionally charged JAKE
