The Butler is an epic political drama spanning from 1926 - 2008. It's the fictional story of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), an African American who went from living and working on the cotton fields as a child to becoming a White House Butler who served during seven administrations between 1957 - 1986.

Cecil vowed to provide his wife (Oprah Winfrey) and 2 children the best life possible, and in doing became the stereotyped Butler who was told by staff of the White House "Donít talk or listen, just serve and the room should feel empty when you're in it". His commitment to the job brought friction to the family, alienating his wife who turned to alcohol and his son Louis, who decided to fight for the civil rights movement.

Seen through the eyes of the Gaines, this "American political history lesson" takes the audience on a whirlwind excursion, revisting historical events including the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the Freedom Riders and Black Panther movements, the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. Cecil is silent witness to history & to the discrimination which was startlingly prevalent in the White House itself.

The Butler is an engaging, inspiring and powerful film, boasting an all-star supporting cast including Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan, John Cusack as Richard Nixon and Robin Williams as President Dwight Eisenhower. Some of the characterisations are over the top on occasions, providing much needed stress relief from the provocative and shocking scenes that unfold on the screen. Forest Whitaker is brilliant as the butler and Oprah Winfrey is superb as Gloria Gaines. Hopefully her performance will pave the way for more regular roles on the silver screen. This is a fine tribute to all those who fought and died for the civil rights movement in America.
