Director: Darren Aronofsky
Starring: Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly

Darren Aronofsky cements his reputation as a director to be reckoned with as he explores addiction on all levels of society. Like all great writer/directors Aronofsky only makes meaningful movies and takes his time to get it right, bringing out the best in his actors. Ellen Burstyn comes out of nowhere and gives the performance of her career, a real special performance. Watch out for her scene about growing old. Brilliant

The movie takes us through four seasons in Brooklyn as we slowly watch in parallel a mother (Ellen Burstyn) and son (Jared Leto) fight their addictions. Mum fights her demons with TV and diet pills (uppers/downers) and her son tries to break free from heroin along with his best mate (Marlon Wayans) and girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly). At first the actors appear a little too Hollywood for these roles, but you soon forget that after the first hit.

Talk about bringing the audience into the film. You can really feel the addiction these characters have, trying to get to that safe warm fetal position. Problem is with each hit, you need a little more until eventually the drugs don't work. There is not short cut to enlightenment

The film is great at showing us the fine line between legal and illegal drugs, not to mention other addictions like TV, sex and money. This is a classic and was the film that first made the world begin to take director Darren Aronofsky seriously. Movies that count... ROBDIDO comment
