Director: John Turturro
Starring: John Turturro, Max Casella

American actor John Turturro, you know him best from the Coen Brothers movies, has made a tribute film to the music of Naples. The son of Italian immigrants, Turturro has gone back to his roots and taken a documentary style approach wandering through the streets of Naples and discovering the passion that lives within it's walls. Known for it's emotional ballads, traditional comedians, it encompasses all that is great about Italy. And you thought they just made three flavoured ice cream...

The film doesn't go into too much depth on the history side, and keeping with tradition lets the music do most of the story telling. I watched this with my dad who wanted more of the original stuff (which they do show a bit), but it concentrates more on contemporary performers giving their versions of the traditional songs. There is an Arabic influence included in most of them that works well and you can really feel the passion in every performance. The Arabic influenced version of Comme Facetta Mametta by Pietra Montecorvino is fantastic. Naples is definitely the melting pot of Europe... ROBDIDO comment
