When Alice (Tomei) & her husband need to go interstate, she enlists her parents (Midler + Crystal) to look after her 3 young children. What should be an easy task results in many comical & problematic situations owing to Alice’s strict rules in child rearing VS the grandparents more liberal views on child upbringing. The children don’t see their grandparents very often and the coldness towards them eventually develops into a close bond.

Parental Guidance is a charming comedy which has an uncanny feel to the Walt Disney films which were prevalent in the 1970’s. It was wonderful seeing such brilliant performers all cast in one movie. From the moment Bette Midler showcases her trademark cheeky grin the audience realise they are in for a great holiday treat. Crystal + Midler work well together and have chemistry as the grandparents. Tomei is well cast as the pedantic mother and the children are very likeable and provide many of the comical situations.

Midler was the number one box office draw back in the 80’s with many hits such as the hilarious Ruthless People and Outrageous Fortune. Looking as beautiful as ever, it’s a shame that she is so under used in movies nowadays. This is a perfect family holiday movie which will probably be enjoyed more by adults owing to their fond memories of these actors’ previous films. Funny and touching at times many audience members will doubtlessly shed a tear or two.
