Director: Michael Bay
Starring: Mark Walhberg, Dwayne Johnson
Stars Mark Walberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie as 3 body builders who want to be successful and wealthy in life, so decide that crime is the quickest and surest way to achieve this "American Dream". Scripted as a black comedy this film is based on real events that occurred in Florida in the mid 90's. Daniel Lugo (Wahlberg) devises a scheme to kidnap a wealthy gym client and extort his assets. In the process they torture and attempt to kill him in scenes which leave little to the imagination. As the movie progresses so do the murders and the bloody gore scenes.
Comedy is prevalent as these kidnappers can't seem to do anything right. Dwayne is hilarious as the junkie ex jail bird who has discovered religion and "preaches the word of the lord" while aiding in all these gruesome slaughters.
Pain and Gain will shock audiences as it swiftly moves from satire, to soft "Three Stooges" style slapstick comedy thence swinging full throttle into scenes of torture, murder and gruesome human dismemberment. Audiences will quickly tire of this disturbing mixture of comedy and gore, as realisation settles in that real life murder victims are being highlighted in this tasteless comedy crime drama.
This story possibly needed to be told, but should have been handled with sensitivity, being scripted without the humour as a standalone crime drama. Murder can be hilarious in films – but not when based on the actual real life murdered. Pain and Gain will leave audiences unnerved and queasy, curious as to why a fine cast participated in this off putting bloodbath. JAKE
