Director: Simon Curtis
Starring: Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne

Michelle Williams gives the performance of her career in this very insightful & elegant film playing the title role of Marilyn Monroe. Nominated for an Academy Award, Michelle is mesmerizing as the lady who was regarded not only as a goddess, but also as the biggest star on Earth.

Based on the dairies of a man called Colin Clarke this film is set in England in 1956 & it tells the true story of a man who gained work as a 3rd Director’s Assistant on a Sir Laurence Olivier movie called The Prince And The Showgirl. It deals with his experiences with Marilyn who was the lead actress on this film & who had the reputation of breaking the hearts of every man that she met. Colin quickly fell for Marilyn even after being warned by others to keep away from her as she “devoured men”.

Magnificently filmed this film gives the viewer an interesting behind the scenes look at the life of Miss Monroe whilst working on this film. Constantly popping pills, showing up late for work, forgetting her lines & being looked down upon by her peers were daily occurrences. A surprising revelation was that the talented Sir Laurence Olivier was desperate for Marilyn’s stardom, whilst Marilyn desperately craved to be an actress even though she was a star. Both were very insecure especially Marilyn who constantly needed to be told that she was a wonderful actress.

The soundtrack contains wonderful tracks of the time which emphasizes how different music was in that era. Casting quality talent such as Judi Dench & Emma Watson in support roles also added to the value of the production. By the end of the movie the audience will learn that being Marilyn Monroe was not easy. Everybody loved her. Always being in the public eye quashed any hope a private life. This new to DVD release is very enjoyable & gems like this are few & far between... JAKE 4.0 comment
