Julia Roberts returns to the big screen as the delightfully unlikeable evil queen, in what this distorted retelling of Snow White can only be labelled as a “fractured fairytale”. Snow White once banished to the woods meets the seven dwarfs who are nothing more than low life bandits. Snow White joins forces with them when she tries to save the prince from the queen who has given him a love potion so that she can marry him and once again be rich.

Mirror Mirror is a laugh a minute movie. It’s the successful comedy which others have tried to be. Most of the audience’s smiles and laughter derives from the dwarfs and also from the prince who is not only charming and good looking but also slightly “intelligence deprived”. Snow White and the wicked queen are perfectly cast and are the vision of the characters if they were to jump out of a storybook. The movie has action, romance and is glorious to watch owing to the bright colours of the costumes, the wigs and practically everything else you see on the screen.

Julia Roberts is great in this film and quite obviously she had fun with the role. The queen is evil and vindictive, but owing to her humour the darkness of the character is toned down somewhat. For this reason Mirror Mirror is a perfect holiday treat for the whole family. The audience at the premiere seemed to laugh at all the right moments and definitely enjoyed the movie, so it should do well at the box office and give Hunger Games a run for their money... JAKE 4.0
