AKA. Soshite chichi ni naru
Director: Hirokazu Koreeda
Starring: Masaharu Fukuyama, Machiko Ono

From Japan comes award winning Like Father, Like Son, a drama which delves deep into every parent's most horrifying nightmare, the shocking revelation their newborns were switched at birth.

When married couple (Masaharu Fukuyama & Machiko Ono) learn from a blood test that their six-year old son was switched at birth they question the importance of blood ties. Is it ethical to have expectations after raising someone else's child for 6 years, that one should have more rights than the biological parents?

Is it overly optimistic to expect these long lost children to re capture the love of their biological parents who they justifiably regard as strangers? Compelling and thought provoking, this is one of the finer films exploring this delicate but controversial issue. Delivered with the right balance of humor & sentimentality, this explores the parents' thought processes in determining whether to exchange their children & the consequences.

Performances from the adult cast are exceptional, but credibility is stretched when, owing to a lack of acting ability, the younger children at times seem to be indifferent and completely unaffected emotionally by the exchange.

Audiences should be satisfied with the predictable conclusion and will doubtlessly debate the themes long after leaving the cinema, pondering what they would do under these circumstances.
