Director: Jon Favreau
Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Jeff Bridges
I didn't expect Iron Man of all comics to have succeeded as a film but Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark. A rich playboy engineer and head of Stark Enterprises, US's biggest Weapons manufacturer. He really doesn't give a stuff, Stark knows he is good and has the money to back it courtesy of dad. There is a great history behind the comic and well worth investing the time to know the back story. All part of the Avengers.
Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is captured by Arabs and escapes by building a human suit made from iron scraps he finds in the Afgan Hotel he is kept prisoner in. You could say this is Iron Man v1.0. He discovers rockets his company make for the U.S are being used by terrorist, so shuts down his weapons division and secretly concentrates on improving his suit. And this is where the fun begins.
The technology is very impressive and you are drawn in during the suits development as it balances fiction with reality and real world technologies. The heart of the gadgetry is power and harnessing enough to keep everything running. NewScientist Magazine has a good story on this.
Action packed with great hard hitting music and heaps of humor along the way, it's Downey Jr's iron clad performance that steals the show. Jeff Bridges is excellent as Obadiah but Gwyneth Paltrow was crap as Pepper Potts. This is the one that kicks off the superhero movies. ROB
