Director: Ron Howard
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy

Chris Hemsworth swaps Thors cloak and hammer with an officer-in-charge outfit and harpoon in this epic 1800ís sea adventure, which trails the voyage of the Essex and its disastrous encounter with the iconic 'demon monster whale' Moby Dick.

Detailing how the author came to write the classic American novel published in 1850, this film is remarkably entertaining with continuously riveting action sequences reminiscent of those from the Jaws movies.

This captivating story of resilience and survival of a group of men who spent over three months lost at sea in a lifeboat with regular terrifying visits from Moby Dick, is unnerving and reveals the unfathomable horrors these poor souls endured whilst at sea.

Director Ron Howards passion for this story reflects in his quality direction, being the most highly recognised element of the production. Adversely, this beautifully photographed film is flawed in its high CGI content, where the ship at times is transparent.

Chris Hemsworths acting also is mostly as wooden as the Essex itself (letís face it, Mr Hemsworth may win awards for his rugged-good looks but will never win awards for his bland acting) but does surprise in some highly emotional scenes where he delivers a moralistic monologue towards the finale. His British accent (is it meant to be British?) also seems to come and go.

Chris Hemsworth has had success as Thor in the incredibly successful Avengers series, but away from this franchise, his films have been snubbed by movie-goers worldwide, notably Black Hat which was not released theatrically in Australia.

Its touch & go whether movie-goers will warm to this killer-whale reboot.
