An exploration of how individuals and society cope with mental illness forms the basis of this stirring drama by Hans Weingartner (“The Edukators”). Peter Schneider plays a mathematician (reminiscent of “A Beautiful Mind”) who early in the film is taken to a psychiatric hospital after a nervous breakdown. Upon his release and with the aid of prescribtion drugs, he is able to hold down a job and lead a normal life. He escapes to the country and discovers a Ukrainian boy who’s orphaned after his mother died from a drug overdose. Will the two be able to communicate with one another and find a way to survive in the cabin they construct? A final plot twist occurs and we are left to wonder about the veracity of what we have just experienced. Who is really mentally disturbed?... COMMENTS
