Director: Spike Jonze
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams
We have come along way since HAL 9000 first became sentient and "Her" is the next evolutionary step in Heuristically programmed computers. HAL begat SAL begat Samantha the Artificial Intelligent Operating System (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Samantha v1.0 makes SIRI look like a C64.
Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is a melancholy kind of guy who writes personal letters for people who couldn't be bothered. After breaking up with his wife he installs a new Operating system on his computer/cloud and tragically falls in love with it.
Sounds crazy and stupid, doesn't it? Well think again as Spike Jonze has written and directed an intelligent and somewhat scary glimpse into the future as we forever become dependent on our computers and mobile devices. Considering we spend most of our waking hours interacting with an OS of some sort, why not get on a first name basis with it... I mean Her
Joaquin Phoenix walks around with his iPhone camera protruding out of his top pocket like a nerd with a pocket protector. Looking closely it's almost a nod to Stanley Kubricks HAL 9000 red eye/lens and Samantha's only physical link to the world.
The cinematography and wardrobe is also very cleverly done, as they make the film look like a modern sophisticated version of the 1970's. It didn't feel like this was set in the future but more like the present with all our gadgets working as they were promised by the manufacturer. ROB
