Director: Anne Fontaine
Starring: Fabrice Luchini, Gemma Arterton
Life imitates art (a bit) in this fun little French movie from Anne Fontaine about the co-incidences surrounding Gemma Bovery and the character Emma Bovery from the famous novel Mrs Bovery by Gustave Flaubert.
Boredom is broken when Gemma and her husband Charles move in next door to Martin Joubert, a literary academic with a passion for Flaubert (he even named his dog Gus). To his great delight he begins to see the similarities between English Gemma and the fictional character Emma. His infatuation with the book and her beauty help him put together the pieces.
This is a clever movie with some fun moments by Fabrice Luchini who plays Martin. Gemma Artertons old charm Victorian beauty is truly mesmerizing with some beautiful profiles of her by the camera. A perfect choice for the role. Even her name lends to the folly.
I read up on the book after watching the film and it was fun to see the clever little bits the writers wove in to the story. If you are a fan of the book then this movie will be a fun little taste before the real Mrs Bovery hits our screens later this year. ROB
