Director: Neill Blomkamp
Starring: Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley
The guys that made District 9 have upped the ante this time around and made another allegory about the refugee crisis with this amazing new science fiction instant classic. Our prawny friend Wikus (Sharlto Copley) is back again and funny as ever playing a bad ass gun for hire along side Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.
Fast forward 50 years into the future and it's now the entire planet that has become a 3rd world... world. Salvation lies in the heavens on a space station called Elysium, and the rich bastards that built it are keeping it all to themselves. No lucky country here my friends. Meanwhile Matt Damon is saving up his money for a chance to emigrate but things don't always go to plan when you board a leaky boat.
Futuristic Science Fiction is a great genre to bring attention to present day issues, and this film is a beaming example of that. Allegories aside it's very entertaining and has some great futuristic concepts and plausible technology to make you think. Who knows maybe the world could end up like this. Civil servant robots, cure for all diseases, cybernetic implants, ever increasing gap between the rich and poor. Or we could just reboot and hope the new operating system won't be as fucked as the old one. ROB
