Director: Jean-Marc Vallée
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto
What an amazing transformation Matthew McConaughey has gone through. Last time he came up on my radar he was playing buffed up romantic leads, but these last few years he seems to be getting back on track from the early days when he was good. This performance is absolutely amazing and the weight loss is a little scary at times on screen.
This is the true story of Ron Woodroof a redneck part time bull rider, who likes to drink, snort drugs and fuck.. without a condom. He eventually ends up with HIV and told he has 30 days to live. But they are pretty tough down in Texas and he finds a way to bypass all the bureaucratic bullshit that the Drug companies have and in true redneck style makes a lot of money on the side selling unapproved HIV medicine on the black market.
You may think this guy is a homophobic asshole at first but death is a leveler for all people and by the end he comes around to caring for the very people he despises. This is seen especially with the relationship he has with a cross dressing junkie played by Jared Leto who puts in an equally strong performance that will touch you. The only disappointment was the miscasting of Jennifer Garner as the doctor and the clumsy way they wove her into the story. Overall a great film and closer insight into the 1980's HIV epidemic. ROB
