This film critic is not a fan of animated feature films, however Ballerina was an enjoyable film. Arresting from the onset.

Set in the late 1880's this film tells the story of Felicie, a young girl who runs away from the orphanage and chases her dream of studying Ballet at the Paris Opera and becoming a ballerina.

Produced on a lowly budget of $30m, the animation may not be as alluring as those from mega priced blockbusters produced by DreamWorks Animation, but regardless it's mesmerizing to watch.

The leading characters are very likable and audiences, especially children, should warm to them very quickly. The songs and musical score are enchanting and set the mood to the film perfectly.

The story is easy to follow – many young children who attend animated films in cinemas quickly lose interest owing to complexities in the storytelling process. Definitely not the case with Ballerina.

The voices were perfectly cast, but the talent behind the voices (with limited appeal) are not the draw card here. The incredibly quick transformation of the orphan's dancing skills from zero to ballerina status when traditionally it takes years to master was not credible, a minor detraction which audiences will doubtlessly overlook.

The stereotyped villains were deliciously ghastly and audiences will love to hate them. The transformation of the evil young female ballerina who was in direct competition for the main role in the ballet was unpredictable and set a righteous message for young children.

The morals in the film are significant and should set ideals for children: dreams can come true regardless of who you are and everybody is a somebody regardless whether they're orphans or from affluent backgrounds.

Poignant and funny, this is perfect holiday family viewing.
