A surprisingly enjoyable & action packed movie which unfortunately hasn’t fared well at the box office owing to its stupid title. Can’t script writers see the flaws in their writings? The idea of American president Abraham Lincoln being a vampire hunter may be ludicrous & off putting to movie goers & had another character been written in place of Lincoln it may have resulted in more interest being generated.

Produced by Tim Burton, this film is dark & sinister & starts in the early 1800’s when Abraham Lincoln was a young boy. His mother is killed by a vampire & as he grows older he discovers that America is overcrowded with vampires. He vows to avenge his mother’s death & so becomes a vampire hunter, where he works in a shop by day & slays vampires by night. He has political aspirations, wanting slavery of the blacks abolished & ultimately becomes the president of America. A civil war is fought between the Americans & the blood sucking vampires & Lincoln resumes his vampire slaying after he realises that America is losing the war to these demons.

Admittedly the distorted historical events are laughable and definitely NOT based on actual events. However it’s a well produced horror thriller which fortunately lacks that “corny feel” which you would expect from a film like this. Fact & fiction are smartly interwoven & the stop/start action sequences will leave you at the edge of your seat. Incredible is the resemblance actor Benjamin Walker has to Abraham Lincoln in his later years.

Very atmospheric with plenty of blood sucking action this movie is recommended for anyone who loves a good horror & action movie. But for optimum enjoyment just remember to disregard any knowledge you may have of American history before you enter the cinema. The Dark Knight paled in comparison to this film, and vampire slaying Abraham Lincoln makes Batman look like a sulking little sissy... JAKE 3.5 comment
