Ever watched a famous singer on stage and wondered who the backup singers were? Or perhaps in watching an old video clip you may have wondered whatever happened to the singers in the background? Who were they and what were their stories?
Backup singers are mandatory in recording sessions and concerts. Without backup singers would be comparable to The Great Gatsby without background actors. Background actors set the atmosphere as backup singers provide the sound which enhances that of the lead singers.
20 Feet From Stardom is an insightful documentary which explores the ups and downs of these “nameless” backup singers whose voices are known by millions. These gifted artists are interviewed and incredibly most started out as gospel singers in churches. Many could sing circles around the lead singers but unfortunately their downfalls outnumber the rewards.
Stories are incredible, such as the record released with the backup singer’s voice secretly replacing that of the lead singer. Dreams can be made but most can be broken. Just when they think their career has finally taken off after having worked with Stevie Wonder for 6 months, reality sets in when their next job is cleaning people’s houses.
20 Feet From Stardom is a tribute to the unknown singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of our time. Rare footage and interviews with Mick Jagger, Sting and Bruce Springsteen along with heartfelt stories from actual backup singers transforms this into a fascinating and entertaining movie experience.
