Brilliantly made, the internal set is fantastic. There were, apparently, several disagreements between the author of the book (Lothar-Gunther Buchheim) and the producers, and I can understand why. I originally read the English (not the American) translation of the book, and there were some odd deviations.

The bar scene at the beginning was more debaucherous than it should have been. And the scene where the correspondent took an oily rag in the face was bizarre. Said correspondent was an officer. What's called these days "a career-limiting move". Just as odd was the Captain almost gloating over the sound of bursting bulkheads. Odd because in the book he was railing against radio announcements of tonnage sunk - he was first and foremost a sailor, and didn't derive pleasure from sinking ships. it was just his job as a naval officer.

It's sad that so many movies are changed for no obvious reason. Lord of The Rings is another movie (series of movies) that was unnecessarily changed. All said and done, it's one of my favourite movies. If you can get the English translation (not the American - I found an entire chapter was missing from the American translation), buy it and read it... THIERRY comment
