This is the most incredible and inspirational movie of all time. Based on the life of Burma’s national heroine Aung San Suu Kyi, it tells of the hardships that befell this lady and her family in the quest for her country ‘s democracy.

Burma was under the control of the military. Student processions demanding democracy resulted in bloodshed and death. Aung became the spokes person traveling around Burma promoting democracy and trying to form a government. This caused much friction and unending retaliation from the military which tried in earnest to get her to leave Burma by disallowing her family from visiting for long periods of time. She was under house arrest for nearly 2 decades even though she convincingly won the election. She could have returned to England but stayed for the millions of people in Burma who relied on her.

This was a very moving and compelling movie. Because of the subject matter it could have been very mundane, however, owing to the great performances by the pivotal actors it was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding film experience. Interwoven was also their love story which thankfully detracted from the violence and bloodshed. The audience at the premiere quietly sat for 142 mins watching in horror as the atrocities against this nation unfolded. Initially it was difficult to understand why a lady would give up so much for her country, but by the end of the movie the audience had total respect for her, we understood why this lady received the Nobel Peace Award...
