It's been a while since I've seen a good boxing movie that inspires me to throw a few punches in the air, and this biographical film of 80's boxers Dicky Eklund and Micky Ward did just that. It's a great underdog story and achieves this by not over doing it with cliche scenes (no running up step's in Philly here) like in so many boxing films.

The true story of Dickie (Christian Bale), a fighter who once knocked out Sugar Ray Leonard and his half brother Micky (Mark Wahlberg). Micky is trying to become a boxer in his own right but is held back by his working class family and his own brother Dickie who is hooked on crack cocaine.

Christian Bale really did look like he was on drugs and lost a lot of weight for the part. His performance was amazing and deserved the Oscar. Wahlberg was also fantastic putting everything into the role, his best so far and one close to his Massachusetts heart. He apparently trained for years to prepare for it & did all the fight scenes for real. The camaraderie between the two is great, especially when Mickie was taking the piss out of Dickie... EXTRA EXTRA

home Jake's Review of The Fighter
A great movie for boxing buffs to watch, The Fighter is available on DVD and tells the true story of the comeback of boxer Micky Ward. Gritty and yet humorous, the movie shows the obstacles he had to conquer to make his comeback a reality; namely his family.

Micky’s family had a hold on him, especially his mother who seemed to think that she was the most knowledgeable person about boxing and that she should solely manage her son’s “career”. Family was “the most important thing in his life”, she’d keep telling him, and as a result he wouldn’t chance getting other managers who could get his career back on track; until his girlfriend came on the scene.

A fun film to watch even for non-boxing enthusiasts owing to the funny scenes involving Micky’s over the top mother and his wacky and ugly troop of sisters who constantly put their noses in his business. One scene in particular guaranteed to raise loud laughter is where Micky’s mother and sisters confront him at his girlfriend’s place and a punch up follows.

Great performances from this wonderful cast ensured that the movie would win film awards all over the world... JAKE 8/10
